I recommend having students practice routines and skills before the experiment - for example, if the experiment involves using beakers to measure ingredients that will be mixed, first practice how to get out the beakers and put them away, then practice measuring with just water, then finally do the experiment. I like the Responsive Classroom approach to this kind of modeling: first the teacher shows what to do, then a kid models it and other students comment on what they saw, and finally everyone practices it together.
