What are good strategies for classroom management?

Rachel,  This is a very broad question......  My first strategy would be to establish procedures for everything you do in the classroom and teach them to your students.  How do you line up?  How do you take up papers?  How do you hand out materials?  How do you get ready to go to lunch.....and on and on and on.......  Dr. T

I concur with Beatrice.  Establishing procedures and expectations is a key to classroom management.  Also, be consistent - do not relax your expectations and apply them to everyone at all times.  If the students feel they have wiggle room then they will, well, 'wiggle' around your expectations!

Another strategy is to create a code of conduct for the class with the students helping author that code.  You all have a purpose in your classroom and establishing the code that applies to everyone (you included) that was created by everyone is one way to build a cooperative community of learners.

Hope this helps,
