Thinking of Science Beyond the Classroom

How do you get students to recognize when they are using scientific concepts and knowledge outside of the classroom? A lot of students feel that what they learn in the classroom is isolated to the classroom and in their every day lives fail to use learned knowledge to solve every day problems. Even the "applied" problems and explorations introduced in classrooms to address this very problem are not always directly relevant to students' every day lives and encounters, so are there other effective ways to bridge this gap?
