Hello educators and education professionals–   I’m contacting you to ask for your help in sharing this opportunity with middle school STEM teachers.   The National Stem Cell Foundation would like to introduce you to the National STEM Scholars program and ask you to share this information with any middle school STEM teachers you think would like to apply!   NSCF partners with the Carol Martin Gatton Academy of Science and Mathematics at Western Kentucky University to fund 10 scholarships each year for middle school teachers who will inspire the next generation of STEM pioneers. Students who get excited about STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) subjects in middle school often go on to take those courses in high school and major in them at the college level. NSCF developed this opportunity as a result of the lack of researchers needed in the U.S. for the advancement of medical and healthcare breakthroughs.   STEM Scholars receive advanced education in the development of STEM projects for their classrooms and spend a full day with a national thought leader in STEM education (the 2017 speaker was Dr. Eric Mazur of Harvard University). Students of National STEM Scholar teachers will work with providers of space technology and education. Additionally, through the NSCF’s relationship with Space Tango (microgravity research & design), NASA is investigating an opportunity for astronauts on the International Space Station to talk directly with the classrooms of our STEM Scholars.   The 2016 inaugural class was selected from 100+ applicants in 18 states! The selection process is a “blinded” process, selection is based solely on the application.   In 2018, we will graduate our third class of STEM Scholars. Each class of STEM Scholars receives the following: [ul] [li]Advanced education and leadership training on WKU’s campus the first week of June (6/3-6/9). All expenses – travel, lodging, meals – paid.[/li] [li]They return to their home schools with a notebook/tablet (a Chromebook or similar) to facilitate collaboration.[/li] [li]A credit of up to $2,500 for technology and supplies to implement a challenge project in their classroom.[/li] [li]Sponsored attendance at the National Science Teacher Association (NSTA) Conference the following March (in St. Louis).
