As an elementary science teacher for several years, my students and I often used laboratory devices with all of the necessary safety precautions (goggles, gloves, etc.). I was very explicit in explaining how to use the equipment, lab safety rules, working in group settings, and routines and procedures for properly using and returning items. As you begin your career working with our elementary students, run plans for your lab and lab equipment through your building administrators and mentors to see what is allowed.
Depending on the textbook/curriculum you will be using, the writers/authors will make suggestions for material usage and age/grade-appropriate substitutions when needed.
