The Department of Urban Education at the University of Houston-Downtown (UHD) invites applications for one or more tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor of Science Education. The candidate will join a department that offers undergraduate and master’s degree programs with a focus on preparing and developing educators to provide equitable educational experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse student populations. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses in elementary and secondary science methods, assist students as they prepare for certification exams, serve as a faculty advisor to student organizations, engage in research/publication, and participate in committee assignments at the department, college, and university levels. The Urban Education department offers undergraduate and master’s degree programs with a focus on preparing and developing educators to provide equitable educational experiences for culturally and linguistically diverse students. Teaching in multiple modalities, day and evening, at any of UHD’s three (3) campuses, and a commitment to excellence in teaching, including the ability to model exemplary methods for working with diverse populations of learners is required.

Required Qualifications

  • Earned doctorate, by the time of appointment, in STEM/science education, Curriculum and Instruction, or a strongly related field with an academic specialization in science education (at least 18 hours of graduate coursework). Doctoral candidates who are nearing completion are also encouraged to apply (ABD considered).
  • Demonstrated ability and/or interest in teaching in a multiethnic, multilingual, multicultural environment
  • At least three (3) years of full-time experience as a K-12 classroom teacher, preferably in a public school setting

Preferred Qualifications

  • Candidates possess a master’s degree in education, an education-related field and/or in the sciences (physical sciences, life sciences, or earth sciences)
  • Experience with special education/special populations at the K-12 level
  • Experience working with English language learners at the K-12 and/or higher education levels
  • Experience in field-based teacher education programs and higher education teaching experience
  • Proficiency in instructional technology, online instruction, and effective course design in a variety of course modalities
  • Experience in creating/leading professional development activities for teachers
  • Experience in Service Learning and/or Community Engagement with multicultural, multiethnic, multilingual populations
  • Evidence of supporting diversity, equity, and inclusion by addressing educational inequities and the improvement of educational outcomes
  • Evidence of successful or potential for success in teaching, service, and research/scholarly creative involvement, including but not limited to publications and grants???????
