Fostering Elementary Scientists

As many people know, there is typically little time devoted to science in the elementary classroom. This is due to the emphasis on reading and math. While this is understandable, are we giving students the scientific opportunities they deserve? Young students naturally question the world around them; this is a characteristic of a scientists. As students advance through elementary school, they begin to notice the little amount of time devoted to science. My third grade students were shocked to find out that in third grade they actually had science as a subject. With this being said, since math trumps the science lesson, it can be difficult to get it in some days. How can we make sure students are able to read and solve math problems but also explore the science realm in a way that doesn't feel rushed?
