By creating engaging activities, students will become interested in not only the activity itself but the concepts involved. For instance, you could take the students outside with magnifying glasses and have them explore the organisms outside. Not only is this a hands-on activity but you could also relate it back to a lesson on the life cycle of a bug. Another idea is creating ice cream. This can be taught with the topic of physical change and it is really engaging because the students get a tasty treat when they are done!
