We have to opportunity of incorporating STEM in our classrooms everyday. As I finish my degree in Elementary Education, I have noticed that science is the least incorporating and in most classroom given the least amount of time to complete. STEM is a multi-opportunity source that helps students learn problem solving, teamwork, understand adaptation, and build their knowledge. STEM does not have to be a complicated topic where students are building bridges and rocket ships (but they most certainly can), but more so understanding weather, motion and force etc. I look forward to using STEM in my classroom everyday as a useful step into getting my students engaged and learning.

Hi Tina,

The NSTA has several lesson plan ideas you can access through your membership.  Check out these ideas here: STEM Resources at

https://www.nsta.org/topics/stem

I like using STEM lessons to help my students practice their engineering design skills.  Here are a couple of examples that might spark students' interests in ways to address food insecurity in their communities through hydroponics:  https://www.nsta.org/resources/engineering-windowsill-hydroponics-system-grow-lettuce

The above was for middle schoolers.  Here is one for elementary students on hydroponics: https://www.nsta.org/lesson-plan/how-does-your-garden-grow

Good luck as you launch your teaching career!

Sincerely,

Prof. Mohr, Dominican University, River Forest, IL
