Science in fourth grade

Hello,

I am a preservice teacher who will be working with fourth grade students this semester. What are some effective ways/ideas to incorporate science with an older group of elementary students? Do they still tend to prefer more of hands on activities? Thank you in advance.

Hi Ariana,

Great question! I'd like to recommend two of the NSTA journals to help with ideas for older elementary students. The first, Science and Children, is full of ideas for students in the elementary grades. I've narrowed down a search here in the Learning Center to show all the articles from this journal - you can find them here:

https://common.nsta.org/search/default.aspx?action=browse&text=&price=&type=journal&subject=&topic=0&gradelevel=Elementary%20School&sort=1&page=0&dep=&coll=&author=

Then,  you might also look for some ideas in the Science Scope journal. This is written for teachers of the middle school grades, but perhaps you can modify the activities to meet your class. Check them out here:

https://common.nsta.org/search/default.aspx?action=browse&text=&price=&type=journal&subject=&topic=0&gradelevel=Middle%20School&sort=1&page=0&dep=&coll=&author=

Let me know if you find any activities that you will use! Does anyone else have experience specifically in fourth grade?

-Megan
