We are about to start our unit on genetics and heredity, and we are starting by comparing and contrasting mitosis and meiosis, as they relate to sexual and asexual reproduction. Our 6th grade students do not need to learn the specific stages of these processes, but need to know them in broad, general ways. So far, every lesson that I've found has students examining the steps and what happens during them. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for how to teach these concepts without going into that much detail??
I like to use the Cells Alive website with my students. Check out their mitosis interactive, their cell cycle interactive, and their meiosis interactive. These interactives do show the different phases, but it would be very easy to simply have your students compare what happens to cells overall.
