Giving at risk students multiple experiences with each concept makes them more confident. An example would be with sound. We used tuning forks, wine glasses with different levels of water in them where they run their finger around the rim, we used balloons and squeezed the air out to make sound, we put a penny in one balloon and a hex nut in the other one and tied off the balloons. Then we would spin the balloon around as fast as we could. The hex nut makes a whirring sound and the penny is very quiet. We made plastic cup "phones" with string. Students can also make instruments to experiment with sound. Most of our schools no longer have a music program so students miss out on that experience.
