Research Experiences for Secondary science, technology, engineering, or mathematics teachers

The University of New Hampshire and Dartmouth College are collaborating to offer middle and high school STEM teachers opportunities to participate in engineering research. These opportunities are supported by grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and are designed to support teachers to integrate engineering and applied science into their teaching curriculum and congruent with the Next Generation Science Standards. These programs provide immersive full-time, summer experiences for teachers to gain research training in an active research group … shoulder-to-shoulder with university undergraduates, graduates, technical staff, and faculty (i.e., a research group). This program is 6-weeks, full-time (approximately 40 hours/week) over the summer (dates are June 27 to August 5; there is some flexibility for a week off for family vacations or other important events).

Available projects and how to apply are listed and include location of research activity, brief description, and where applicable and desired prerequisites.

While in the Summer program, teachers will receive engineering research training and follow a research plan where they will read research papers, use instruments to collect and analyze data, and present a research poster at a Summer Research Symposium. Supports for participating teachers includes … full member of a research group, a community of approximately 10 teacher-peers in the program, $800/wk stipend, travel and lunch allowances, facilitated discussions among teachers about progress toward goals and support with challenges. There are also possibilities for teachers to receive single-dorm and room/board during the six-week period. For some projects there is a $1,000 materials and supplies allowance to support teachers to develop/enhance their teaching with necessary engineering supplies and equipment.
