Unstructured Science

I love the concept of unstructured science lessons that allow students to explore. How do I find the happy medium for this? Not having too much instruction, but enough to guid students in the right direction of what standards need to be met.

Hi Sarah -- In my experience, the 'happy medium' depends on the age, experience level, and interests of the students.  As you get to know them, you'll discover which students need more guidance or structure. Questions can also be used to probe student thinking during an activity: What are you observing? What is happening? What would happen if you...? Why did you try that? What was your thinking?
