Hi all! I've just finished my credential program and I am preparing for my first year teaching! I would love to hear suggestions of hands-on activities, resources, books, etc. to make sure science will be fun and engaging for my students. I appreciate all the feedback and suggestions you may have! -Amy

Hi Amy! Congratulations becoming a science teacher -- being part of NSTA is a huge resource! Although I don't talk much about engaging lessons, I have written some blog posts explaining some of the behind the scenes work needed to start a science classroom, as well as other pieces on my blog: http://fornewscienceteachers.blogspot.com/2015/08/first-steps-to-teaching-science.html I hope it helps and good luck! Sincerely,

What grade level will you be teaching? That will help us to narrow our suggestions.

I just saw your grade level higher in your posting. I will be back with some suggestions after I think them over because there so many interesting things to do in science!!!

Go to this website of a friend of mine http://eequalsmcq.com/ and look at the top right for "Lab Notes". Sign up for those and you will get all kinds of ideas. You would probably get your first reply at the beginning of August. Once you get signed up and receive the first Lab Note you can look at the archive for the last three years. Each activity is quick and easy. They were designed for home schools but work fine in the regular classroom. You will not get any junk mail from this!! Good luck,

Welcome to science teaching Amy!! I was a PreK-6th science specialist/curriculum designer for many years, and it was a ton of fun. I write a blog with science activities and learning ideas for Teachers and Parents. You might find it useful: www.shareitscience.com If you ever have specific questions, feel free to ask. My contact information is available through my website, or connect with me here at NSTA. Good luck! You're in for a great, yet rewarding challenge and adventure! Best, Sarah

Hello and congratulations! I came across the attached article that talks about using apps to teach science principles and loved it. Some of the apps suggested in the article did not work with my phone/computer but I was able to find some really great alternatives. A few of the alternative apps I found were the ' Periodic Table ' by Socratica, and ' Bacteria ' which provides a very detailed look at bacteria with a quiz included. Hope this helps a little and good luck.

Congratulations on your position! I am currently in a 4th and 5th grade endorsement program, and I will graduate in December and become a first year teacher as well. I am both excited and nervous! I love that you came to this site looking for resources that will be fun and engaging for your students because that is very important for their learning. I remember learning out of a textbook and through worksheets when I was in fifth grade, and it wasn't fun for any of us, and this is often what I have seen in today's schools. Therefore my advice to you would be to gather as many resources as you can and make changes as you go to fit your students. Allow them to explore their natural curiosity and work with their hands before telling them the facts or theories. Help them problem solve and think critically. You have definitely come to the right place, as this site offers so much! You're going to be a great teacher, and good luck!
