Science experiments when attendance is an issue

Fellow educators,

Does anyone have recommendations for the best way to catch students up when they've missed one or several days in class due to attendance and you are trying to catch them up? My curriculum allows me to print off inquiry skills pages to complement a student work page for an experiment, but often I just feel like the student is missing out on so much. Sometimes, I'll try to include a relevant video link, but typically its a challenge to find one that closely emulates our structured one in curriculum. Thoughts?

Hi Amy, I am currently a senior in college but one thing that I have seen my cooperating teacher do is write a checklist for the students with details to each thing they have missed. Over the years, she has recorded videos of her teaching the lessons in class, even if they are just a screen recording of the board. This allows for the content to be exactly what they did in class, providing extra resources from YouTube if needed.

Not sure if this helps but this is what I have seen.

Hello Amy!

I am only a preservice teacher, but I know how difficult it can be to catch a student up when they've missed school. An idea I think is really neat is creating a buddy system within your class. This entails pairing the student who was absent with a peer that can help them catch up on notes or anything they missed in class when they were gone. This would work great for higher grade levels and create a sense of community in the classroom.

Another idea is doing a condensed mini-lesson. Although it feels like there isn't enough time in the day to reteach one thing after another, this is an effective way to connect with your student and get them caught up. This condensed lesson would be a brief review during a break or after class that focuses on the key points they missed.

Hope this helps, and good luck!
