Hello everyone,

I am a college education student currently enrolled in a science methods course. I have to create a unit plan composed of three lessons. My unit is for a fifth grade classroom and is focusing on the properties of matter. My first lesson was a discrepant event focusing on how matter is made of molecules that are too tiny to be seen. My second lesson involves students using physical properties to explain how substances interact and identifying substances that can and cannot dissolve (solutes, mixtures, etc.) I need help figuring out a STEM lesson/activity I can do with my fifth grade students regarding the properties of matter? Your suggestions will be much appreciated, thank you!

Hello Angela,

I answered a couple of questions similar to this in other posts:

Hope this helps!

I teach 5th grade and have for 4 years now. We just finished this unit and I did a quick hands-on creating mixtures and solutions in my classroom. I told my kiddos to look aroud the classroom for supplies we could use to make a mixture and a solution. They decided to make a mixture of math manipulatives and a solution of water with food coloring! They came up with this all on their own! It was great to see and then we took it a step further and decided how we could take the mixutre and seperate it out using phyiscal characteristics.
