Formative assessment is an ongoing process used to determine student knowledge as well as mastery of a lesson or concept. Formative assessment is used to evaluate student learning and to determine if a lesson needs to be repeated or if one can advance in instruction. Formative assessment refers to a wide variety of methods that teachers use to conduct in-process evaluations of student comprehension, learning needs, and academic progress during a lesson, unit, or course. Formative assessments help teachers identify concepts that students are struggling to understand, skills they are having difficulty acquiring, or learning standards they have not yet achieved so that adjustments can be made to lessons, instructional techniques, and academic support.
The general goal of formative assessment is to collect detailed information that can be used to improve instruction and student learning while it’s happening (Great Schools, Partnership, 2014).
Formative assessment comes in multiple forms. Classroom assessment often involves a formal paper-and-pencil approach. One of the best ways to collect information about students’ thinking is by formally or informally listening to students when they are “talking science” (Keeley, 2019). Examples of what formative assessments will look like in my classroom includes think-pair-share/peer assessment, exit/admission tickets, reflection journals and quizzes.
What do you know about night and what things happen at night? Which animals do you think are active during the day, and which are active during the night (NSTA, 2022)?
