I'm looking for STEM activities to do during a unit on the properties of matter with second graders. Any suggestions would be helpful!

Hi Nina, I found a couple of journal articles in the Learning Center that you may be interested in: First, this article gives some fun exploration activities to help start a discussion about matter - http://common.nsta.org/resource/default.aspx?id=10.2505%2f4%2fsc17_054_08_52 Second, this article lists some tradebooks that you can use when teaching about matter - http://common.nsta.org/resource/default.aspx?id=10.2505%2f4%2fsc12_049_06_22 Does anyone else have any lessons that they've taught in the past with success to share? -Megan

I use Picture Perfect Science Lessons, books because they use literature to engage children in STEM challenges! http://www.nsta.org/publications/press/picture.aspx

I was just made aware of the NSTA, so I'm new here. But, I have a resource you may be interested in. Have you been to RubeGoldberg.com? Head over there and click on Education. Lots of STEM material for the classroom there. (I'm the guy that illustrated the book listed second there, under 'FREE Lesson Plans and Resources for teaching Rube Goldberg style.') I'm not an educator, and am new to the STEM world- anxious to hear what teachers think. :)

I love Rube Goldberg Machines! I think those are so crazy imaginative and engaging for students. I think I would try something like that closer to the end of the year with 2nd graders. Welcome, Ed. Glad you're here. It's a great place to collaborate and search for ideas.

Hi Neenah, I found a couple ideas online that seem fun and may be helpful for your next lesson plan that involves STEM. These pages provide tons of activities: https://littlebinsforlittlehands.com/a-year-of-the-best-stem-activities/ http://thestemlaboratory.com/stem-activities-for-kids/ http://www.teachjunkie.com/sciences/stem-challenges/ I hope this gives you some ideas. -Liliana

Hi Nina, I have recently read an article on the NSTA website that say that stories are a great way to incorporate STEM into a lesson. I feel like with the content area of matter and properties the short story/read aloud options are endless.

Hi Nina, Kendyl and everyone participating in this post! There are already so many great ideas to check out. Kendyl, I was wondering if you could share the name of the article you referred to about how stories can be a great way to incorporate STEM into a lesson. That idea really peaks my interest! Thanks, Carolyn
