Using personal examples to connect to scientific phenomena

When student teaching in biology classrooms, I brought up my genetic blood clotting disorders to give an example of mutations in genetic coding. Additionally, I was teaching a liver enzyme lab and a student came to me asking about the symptoms of liver failure (which was discussed at beginning) and confided in me in his recent overdose and was able to connect the lab to his personal connections. Personally, I think this humanizes the teacher and encourages students to make personal connections. However, can this blow up in your face? Does anyone have positive or negative experiences with sharing and receiving personal information?
