After reading the article, 'Uncovering Students’ Ideas About Inherited Traits' by Page Keeley, I feel as though I have learned a lot about teaching genetics and inherited traits to younger students. In my elementary school days this was not a topic that was truly covered. In fact, I don't remeber learning anything about genetics until my freshman year of high school. However, I remember loving this topic so much that I did more research outside of school over it. In this article, Page Keeley mentions introducing these topics (that are meant for 5-6th graders), at a younger age such as 3rd grade by the 'Mice probe'. Although, many 3rd graders can not go too in depth yet, this is a great intial activity to get their minds going and to find interest within who they are and how they acquired their own traits!
