I think that more teachers should integrate science into other content areas. Science is being pushed aside because we are concentrating so much on LA and math. I think that all subjects are important for a child's growth. When teaching Language arts the children should be reading 75% of the day, and we do read in science so why not integrate Reading strategies with science. In the past quarter I ...

To add on the Rena's post about technology and space.. now that technology has come so far with all the new aps on the IPADS it would be ever more fun to teach them about SKY and SPACE through technology. The students will be able to use the resources to study the sky and what is out there and see first hand through a electronic device that can be held in your hand.

This was a very interesting conversation..I teach 5th grade and I never thought about the concepts of space being hard to teach at the lower elem. Ages. It was great to see the perspective of younger aged teachers.... It made me see the spiral affect pre 5th grade and what they learn in the lower grades. Solar System review
The Solar System Sci Guide was a good place to find websites for the studetns to explore. There were some helpful activities. The features of it that I enjoyed were the many different websites that provided facts and background knowledge. There was one section Exploring Planets in the classrom Hands on Activities that I found to be useful if I were teaching the Science and Social Studies standsrds for fourth grade. It had a Comparision chart of geological processess which would be useful when teaching weathering , erosion, and deposition.
However, I do feel that there needs to be more lessons geared towards the basic understanding of the solar system and lessons for fifth grade students. Even if it stated that it was for fifth grade, I know my students would be confused with some of the information provided. A lot of it was very scientific and wordy.
If the students already had a strong background knowledge then the websites would be great for them. They would be able to go beyond the simple concepts of the solar system and explore other theories and ideas. This sci guide would be great for teachers who's content knowledge was science.
