Nutrition Review
With what seems to be a fast food joint on every corner, it's more important than ever that today's students learn value of good health and nutrition. However, a child's diet is as important to their overall health as their academic appetite. Proper nutrition can prevent many medical problems, including becoming overweight, developing weak bones, and developing diabetes. A healthy diet will ensure that the child grows to their full potential. As such, nutrition education is an important part of the school curriculum and enables children to learn at an early age the importance of healthy eating. This is why I really enjoyed this collection. It is a comprehensive compilation of resources that highlight on this area that is severely lacking in today’s curriculum. Not only does it explain the in’s and out’s of teaching nutrition (“Science Shorts: The Challenge of Nutrition”), it also breaks common misconception about nutrition education (“The Trouble with Bubble Gum”), recommends helpful activities to use in your instruction (“Thought For Food: Students Learn Science With Healthy Eating”), provides suggestion for approaching the topic in a interdisciplinary manner by incorporating math and science (“Be A Food Scientist”), and proposes strategies to extend your lesson outside of the classroom, such as simple methods for student’s to start their own home garden (“From Garden To Table”).
