Something you might consider is have students sort different objects from nature into the different types of matter. You could have them find the different objects, or select them yourself, or find articles that contain properties from both categories (like non-Newtonian fluids?). It depends on how well your students have learned the material, and what grade level they are of course.

From my experience, animals do not have enough interest with the students to keep a consistent attention draw for much longer than the initial introduction of it. When they're given free time to interact with the animals, they're still interested, but not enough to stare at it during their work. One way you could emphasize the difference would be to teach by contradiction. If there's a warm day in winter or a contradictory day in spring (not raining if that's what the children think of spring), you could show them that the weather may be a particular way, but the season itself is still the same since it doesn't change in the same manner.
