Great idea reading Bear story! Students like books read out loud and then making a connection. Clever details tying in the Bear book and popcorn with area, perimeter and volume.Real life and story life connection!

Science Sampler: When do girls lose interest in math and science?

Girls interest/like math and science study

Read the data in this sampler for an Ohio study. 7th grade girls loose interest in math and science. Yet, 5th grade girls start liking science less and 6th grade girls like math less. Conclusion: Girls do not dislike just loose interest! Interesting finding for a select group.

I have to know meaning of MATH!

This book is a summer read for me! I have to know the answers to the following: Why do you “carry” numbers when adding? Why do you need a common denominator when adding fractions? (Robertson says you don’t, by the way!) Where does the number p come from? And who in the heck invented those strange formulas for area and volume? I want to share this information with my students and make sense of the thinking! Must find the connection!
