If you still go with the powerpoint, you could add some videos or rap videos. For example, the energy song by Mr. Edmonds is cheesy enough for the students that they would enjoy it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uLSFigtLKg&feature=related ' target="_blank"> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uLSFigtLKg&feature=related " target="_blank"> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_uLSFigtLKg&feature=related...

Electric and Magnetic Forces

Electric and Magnetic Forces SciGuide Review
Electric and Magnetic Forces has 3 themes:
Electric Charges with Charge That Balloon lesson plan using static electricity,
Electrostatics and Current Electricity with How Much Current? lesson plan using a simple circuit with a magnetic compass as a volt reader,
and Electromagnetism with A Balancing Act! lesson plan investigating magnetic forces vs. gravity.
In regards to Charge That Balloon lesson, I'm not sure I can adapt the balloon activity to use in my latex free school. However, I found the other 2 lesson plans very interesting and cheap to do with my elementary students. All the lesson plans are easy to understand and doable for my students.
The website resources are also excellent. I especially liked the Exploring Magnetism for providing more lesson plans with worksheets and rubrics and Blobz Guide to Electric Circuits for a fun interactive website for the students. I will definitely use this SciGuide for the lessons and web resources with my students.
Solar System

Solar System Sciguide Review
The Solar System Sciguide is divided into 4 themes with assigned lesson plans:
A Look at the Planets: Making and Mapping a Volcano Lava Layering
Earth in Space: Asteroids, Comets, and Meteorites: Craters
Earth in Space: Modeling Orbits in the Solar System
Formation of our solar System: Looking for Life.
For my fifth grade standards, I could only apply the Modeling Orbits lesson plan. Also, I didn't really understand how Making a Volcano applied to the A Look at the Planets theme. There are many good website links but there were some that were invalid. I used the "Solar System Trading Cards" website as a jumping point for my students to research the planets. I also used "The Planets" and "Guide to Solar System" websites. On a side note, I found another interesting lesson plan "Solar System Math" using the nasa.gov links provided in the Sciguide. It had included a clay model of planets using proportions as well as the scale model of distances of the planets. Overall, the website resources/activities/videos are good for student and teacher information but I didn't find all the lesson plans as useful.
Life Cycles and Inherited Traits

Great Resources on Life Cycles and Heredity
This guide is divided into 2 parts:
Living Things Have Life Cycles (3 subparts:
Stages of Animal Growth and Development;
Statege of Insect Growth and Development;
Stages of Plant Growth and Development)
and Many Characteristics of an Organism Are Inherited (2 subparts: characteristics; Nature vs. Nuture).
The Butterfly life cycle lesson plan and What Makes You You lesson plan are easy to understand and use. I've adapted the What Makes You You lesson plan for my 5th graders. I really liked the recommended websites: "What is a gene," "Examples of Inherited Traits," and the free Brain pop "Heredity" video. Another website that the 5th graders loved was the "Wear A Chimp on Your Wrist" activity from DNA Detective at ology.amnh.org. This activity seemed to help the students see the DNA structure. Overall, I liked how the Sciguide provided sample lessons, student examples, and web resources. It helped me a lot to have these resources in one area.
