Coral Reefs Collection Review
For this collection review, I decided to review Ana’s coral reef collection. This semester, I became largely familiar with the topic of the coral reef ecosystem, so I wanted to see what were some other resources in NSTA that I might have missed in my own collection. I see that Ana included 2 scipacks, a journal article, a book chapter, and 3 podcasts. I personally have never interacted with the podcasts in the NSTA, but I believe that every method of learning is a good way to learn new things. This may be good for some people who learn the best by listening or hearing things. The scipacks are the best for people who want to learn in an interactive manner. The articles are ideal for those learners who find reading to be the best way to gain knowledge. The podcasts contain a great deal of information for educators of all grade levels on the topics of coral reef ecosystems and how these topics can be taught in the classroom. They talk about the coral reef environment, the anatomy of a coral reef, and the dangers it poses when it comes to pollution on the ocean. In the book chapter, called Turtle Hurdles, students learn all about sea turtles and explore why they are being exposed to many threats. It is a lesson to expose to the students the many dangers that sea turtles face on a daily basis, and what humans can do to help them. In the other article in Ana’s collection, Journey to the Reef, a teacher describes a weeklong unit plan to teach her 5th grade students all about the coral reef ecosystem, despite being far from a body of water, but also integrating other subjects into the lessons, such as math, social studies, and literacy. Altogether, Ana’s collection is a good one and has many different ways learning new things about the coral reef ecosystems.
