I am glad to see that you mentioned the KWL charts. I use thses a lot in Science, sometimes as my pre-test. I like to have the students post their thoughts with sticky-notes. I'm sure we all use some type of formative assessment during our teaching. I also know that I need to step it up and use them more frequently. Of course there is the usual pre-test to find out what the students already know, or as the case may be, don't know. The idea of using pictures for the younger elementary students is great. As they become more familiar with words, writing and the maps themselves they can begin to add in words with the pictures. It would cetainly help to understand what those litle minds are thinking.
