I am a senior in Florida International University's Bachelor degree program for Elementary Education. Science is one of the major courses.
For 26 years, I was a Florida licensed Optician, and changing careers at middle age is no easy task with little kids at home, and in the middle of a pandemic. But, everything is possible! I'm maintaining Honors status, and going forward!

I just saw this is from 2014.... but I will answer anyways. I would ask myself how heavy my workload is now in the midst of moving, and if the children are older, I would ask THEM. I think including the students in some of our decisions builds trust. Hope this helps someone.

Depends on the reason why you want the pet in the first place. If it's to show them off, as observation, then that can be done virtually. If it is to bring them responsibility, then ask your administrator what is allowed at your school. If it is to have a class mascot, to unite them as a team, then consider what you want them to feel they are united by (courage, confidence, ...

i am a senior undergraduate student at Florida International University. The Teaching Science in Elementary Schools curriculum teaches hands-on experiments, the 5E model, and Inquiry. Definitely not a workbook and reading type of curriculum. In my opinion, all classes should be this diverse in teaching, especially to bring in the three learning styles.

This webinar showed me a tool to use in the classroom, and explained in a simple way what the difference is between Data and Evidence. I particularly liked an exercise the facilitator had the students do on how a blind drummer can sense the beat. CER (Claim, Evidence, Reasoning) was discussed in detail. And, I learned to incorporate KLEWS, an acronym for a graphic organizer used to support CER, in my classroom.
