Great Selections!
I chose to review this collection not only because it had a variety of journal articles, but it also included a Sci-pack and web seminar archive. I found the first journal article “Hoeked” on science very useful and added it to my own collection. The journal article describes the work of Hooke and Leeuwenhoek and gives several hands-on activities that allow students to become familiar with the microscope. Students are able to compare and contrast animal and plant cells through the use of a microscope. This article is great for a lesson on the use of a microscope in a science classroom. The next journal article Ecosystem Explorations: connecting and ecology field experience to the classroom by Kristen L. Gunckel is also a great article to include in a collection. It covers the Ecosystem Explorations curriculum which includes seven classroom lessons. The lessons are very engaging and incorporates scientific inquiry skills, cooperative learning experiences, and writing activities. The activities are centered around a conceptual framework and helps students understand how we depend on the ecosystem. The activities are great, and I would definitely be incorporating them into my future science classroom. My favorite thing about this collection is the web seminar archive: picture-perfect science lessons: using children’s books to guide inquiry, grade k-4. This seminar is great because It gives primary grade teachers information on how to implement and create inquiry lessons in the classroom. Although the seminar took place 7 years ago, the information is very relevant and important. I also liked the fact that this collection included the interdependence of life sci-pack. I think that students will benefit tremendously from reading and reviewing the information presented. There are a lot of interactive videos that allow the students to engage in what they are learning. Having a post and pre assessment is also great because it allows the teacher to see if the students understood the material being taught. Overall, this collection had activities, information, and materials relevant to implementing science in the classroom. GREAT JOB!
