great tips for classroom dissection
This collection is a great resource to refer back to when planning a dissection in any sort of science classroom. Not only are the resources of varying levels, focusing on elementary all the way up to college level 3D microscopic dissections. Also included are many articles that focus on the importance of safety when such experiments and dissections are done. While performing a dissection can be fun and educational it can also pose certain risks if not conducted in the right manner. Advice on proper specimen handling and the use of personal protective gear are just some of the topics discussed.
Some of my favorite aspects to this collection are that the creator offered material explaining the use of virtual dissections in the classroom. While virtual experiments may not be every teacher or students first choice sometimes it is the only option. This also provides insight for those teachers who don’t feel comfortable using real animals for dissection due to any sort of moral beliefs. Another article I was a fan of was the one that discussed the squid dissection. I have never heard of a class dissecting a fresh squid and then having the opportunity to taste it as well. It provides a great experience for students, being that squid is a staple in some cultures diets.
