I would give each student a magnet and have them explore what is magnetic by going around the room and touching objects with the magnets. As they walk around the room they can write the names of the objects that are magnetic and not magnetic on a t-chart. Students can discuss their findings with the whole class when they are done and think of the question: "What makes something magnetic?"

I would let it be known that you are no different than their teacher. Tell them to pretend that their teacher is here observing their behavior as they work. I would set clear guidelines with the students at the beginning of the class, so they know that you are in charge and they are to act as they would if their teacher was here.

I think you should have no more than 5 rules for older grades and no more than 3 for the younger students.
I would say that my three main rules would be:
1. Follow all oral and written directions carefully.
2. DO not touch any materials, equipment, or chemicals in the laboratory area until instructed to do so.
