I am a pre-service teacher that just finished up teaching my first unit plan a few weeks ago and will be student teaching after the holiday break. While observing and teaching my unit plan, it was hard to not notice the amount of cellphones that are being used during class time. I was wondering what tactics other teachers use to try to encourage students to not be on their cellphones. Any feedback...

A few weeks ago, I taught a 10 day unit plan for my practicum class in a 10th grade biology class. I taught evolution and it went decently well but most of my lesson plans revolved around a more traditional approach: do a mini lecture then do a dry lab then a worksheet. I know there is nothing inherently wrong with this but I just felt it to be a bit boring. Next semester I will be student teachin...

Classroom Management Collection

Good Collection
This collection of articles is great for teachers that may be new to teaching or just need new ideas to freshen up on their classroom management skills. Each article goes over separate aspects of classroom management but they all have one theme in common, prepare and organize before the start of the school year. Setting ground rules in the first few weeks of class will help keep students in a routine and will help to maximize the time you have in class. I do have a question that wasn't answered by any of the articles, what can a teacher do to minimize distractions such as phone usage in a classroom? This has become a big problem in schools but this problem is not addressed in this reading group.
Heredity and Variation: Inheritance

Great!
This is a great resource for anyone who wants to learn or refresh their memory about heredity. I really like the format of this because it allows you to see each of the topics and you can bounce around to the parts that you may need the most review on. I found the interactive parts to be helpful too. While going through this, I couldn't help to think, this may be a great resource to allow students complete. When going over this topic in the class room, I found many students had a hard time understanding chromosomes and how they are passed on from generation to generation and this science objective did a great job explaining it along with useful interactive games.
Classroom Management: Setting Up the Classroom for Learning

Very Informative!
This is a very well written and organized article that does a great job going through all of the processes that make a classroom run efficiently. The main take away is to plan ahead and think about the flow of the class. As a pre-service teacher, this article has really got me thinking about the importance of ground rules and how a classroom is physically laid out. Very Informative!
