Informative Article!
When teaching science, it is crucial that students be exposed to texts rooted in fact. Because of this, educators often rely on textbooks to provide this information. This article recognizes the importance of informational texts when teaching science. However, author Mathew Vick also notes that there are resources other that textbooks that are equally (or more) effective than textbook learning. Vick doesn’t discredit the textbook. Instead, he explains the importance in exposing students to a variety of different resources. This not only promotes engagement, but also comprehension. Through using a myriad of texts, we can ask students more in-depth questions that go beyond strictly literal comprehension. Vick has some great ideas for how to use informational texts to immerse students in the content. These are meaningful activities that promote evaluation of the text!
