Water Warriors Reading this article you learn that a group of fifth grade students, their teachers, and a few of adult chaperones go over to a pond close to their school to test water samples to see the quality of the water. The water from the pond was polluted from the rain run off from nearby roads and parking lots. The grass was mowed so short to the edge or the pond that it added pollutants to the water. After the students learned all of this they learned that a polluted pond can impact the entire aquatic ecosystem. The next project the students were able to do was to take the local lake and see how they can clean it up and make it safe for swimming again. The lake was closed years back due to an E. Coli outbreak in the water. The students shared this information with local officials, hoping to work with them to develop a solution to clean up and re-open the beach. They found out that the E. Coli bacteria was coming from septic systems along the lake shore. If the teacher did not have her students doing this activity they would of never wanted or been interest in wanting to clean up the lake for swimming. They also would not of brought this information to the local officials. Therefore, the local officials would not of been able to have found out that the reason for the outbreak of E. Coli was coming from the local septic systems that ran along the lake shore.
