Lesson Plan 1: Forces Push Back

by: Carla C. Johnson, Janet B. Walton, and Erin Peters-Burton

This lesson introduces students to the module and the culminating challenge of the module, the Swing Set Makeover Design Challenge. A video, discussions, and a trip to the school playground help students connect to the project and excite their curiosity. Science activities focus on motion, emphasizing inertia, gravity, and friction forces. In mathematics, students graph data related to swing sets, and in English language arts (ELA), the class begins to explore parks through literature. Social studies conversations launch a park research project and address citizens’ responsibilities to use their expertise and knowledge to benefit the community. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, Internet resources, and outcomes are provided. This book selection includes the Table of Contents, About the Editors and Authors, Acknowledgments, and Index.
