Keep It Warm, Keep It Chill

During a long trip in the car, a student wonders whether the expensive travel mug used for iced tea keeps drinks hot or cold better than the foam cup holding coffee. In this problem, students explore the insulating ability of several kinds of cups with both hot and cold drinks to determine how well they maintain the temperature of a drink. At least one of the cups should be an insulated travel mug with a double-wall structure made of plastic or stainless steel. It’s recommended including a ceramic coffee mug and a selection of paper and foam cups. Students should record their predictions of which cups they think will be the best insulators for either hot or cold liquids. Two sets of trials should be completed: one to measure how long hot liquids will stay hot and another to test how long cold liquids stay cold. A materials list, teacher background information, safety practices, assessment, and outcomes are provided.
