Planning Our Outdoor STEM Classroom

This lesson introduces students to the engineering design process (EDP) as a way to plan and construct an outdoor STEM classroom. Students will use the EDP by working through its steps together to design a birdbath.They learn about dialogue in fictional texts and create a fictional text that incorporates elements of their outdoor STEM classroom. Students explore sundials and will begin to gain an understanding of engineering as a profession as they learn to use the EDP to create a plan for the outdoor STEM classroom. A materials list, safety notes, standards, teacher background information, assessment, and Internet resources are provided.
