Attraction and Repulsion

by: Michael Horton

In this lab, students will experience the interaction of charged objects. Students should realize that the phrase “opposites attract” isn’t exactly correct. It is not just positively and negatively charged objects that are attracted. Positively charged objects are also attracted to neutral objects, and negatively charged objects are attracted to neutral objects, too. The phrase would be better stated as “Likes repel, unlikes attract.” Water will be attracted to a charged balloon and water itself is not charged.
