Helping students develop skills for scientific conversation has many benefits. Engaging in scientific conversation elicits students' prior knowledge, enables students to construct their understanding of science concepts, encourages all students to participate in science, and reflects the nature of science. How, then, can you promote scientific conversations among students? This chapter begins with strategies for organizing classrooms and conducting lessons that support scientific conversations, and then highlights questioning practices that enhance the level of discourse in your classroom.
