I have used a similar lesson to discuss adaptation with students, and appreciate the incorporation of science reading into the lesson. All the materials for the activity are included, or incorporate it into your own penguin activity. Prompts to support the reading help point out the key ideas as students read the included article. Supporting reading in science is important to learning not only content, but learning how to read science. Cues similar to those used in traditional reading classes are incorporated, providing relatively seamless integration with traditional reading classes.

It employes an activity involving students creating a penguin and then going through a series of activities to see if their penguin's adaptations suit it to a certain environment. Also, this chapter uses several literature techniques as students read about the activity.
