The reason I chose this journal article was because it reminded me of the mini field trip that we took a couple of semesters ago. It took place in NEIU’s own backyard. The swamp area just outside of the Physical Education Complex is habitat to so many plant and tree species. This swamp area along with areas in our neighborhood schools are ecosystems with biodiversity. Students can also see that they can find their own ecosystems in their own backyard. We can turn a school yard exploration day into many lessons for science, math, and even reading classes.

The activities described in this article help address three big ideas about biodiversity that are often misunderstood. Using the schoolyard as a laboratory, have your students explore plants, invertebrates, bacteria, and fungi. Although your students will enjoy the activities, the culminating activity is a bit lacking. Additionally, there is little guidance in terms of assessment or modifications for students who may have special needs.
