According to the authors, students have misunderstandings about light as they enter middle school, and it is the responsibility of science teachers to find activities that dispel their mistaken ideas. The authors provide two questions to pre-assess their students. Then using a 5E set of activities (in a stations form of implementation), students should be able to understand that light is absorbed and reflected off objects differently depending on the color and surface of the object, and that color is a result of reflection, not absorption. The authors also site references to the new Framework in their discussions. A very well written article for an educator wanting to teach a unit about light.
