The reason for the score is because the article is so dated (9/2000) and for its lack of suggestions for use. However, the article would provide a nice introduction for a high school or college science or environmental class that wanted to do research on a current environmental issue - and this is still a current controversy in the Southern California area. The article provides a history and a balance of environmental and political issues associated with restoration (or not) of the Salton Sea. From there, students could look up the current state of affairs and discuss whether efforts have made any difference or have hurt the environment or the people of the area.
