A science educator and a literature professor examined a number of science education trade books and created a list of books that express science as accessible and a process instead of exclusive and a set of facts. After assigning books to pre-service teachers to read, they discovered 5 themes identified by the readers in common for good trade books in the classroom to engage and excite students about science. I would recommend that these themes are also common for successful science trade books at any grade level.

This article describes how a university science educator and children’s literature professor teamed up to devise a rubric for evaluating the usefulness of science trade books. They came up with a 5-theme evaluating tool and used it to identify 25 acceptable books. The tool and list of books are included in the article. As a result of this collaboration, several books were discovered that view scientists as passionate people and provide interesting, engaging stories to spark individual interest in science and the work of scientists.
