The reader may question how the "Teach them to fish" proverb relates to science education. Yet, a shift in emphasis from presenting knowledge through lecture and demonstration to encouraging active learning, in which students learn with understanding, exemplifies this proverb in the classroom. The author observes that the students he teaches are active learners. Guided inquiry enables them to learn content as they carry out investigations—an almost daily activity. Student achievement is higher when both the concrete content and the inquiry investigations are a part of the science classroom.
