FAMILY MATH and Science Education: A Natural Attraction

by: Grace Davila Coates and Harold Asturias

The Lawrence Hall of Science is a resource center for science and mathematics education and a public science center with exciting hands-on experiences for learners of all ages. One of its programs, FAMILY MATH, is built on the belief that children can learn and enjoy mathematics, and focuses entirely on families learning mathematics together and understanding the role of math in school, work, and daily life. Informal learning allows families to play with ideas and potential solutions in ways that relate to their own experiences and previous knowledge. FAMILY MATH connects families who may never have come to school events otherwise, in positive and safe environments for purposeful learning.
