Everyday talk has a way of messing with student's science knowledge. Stores sell "plant food" which is not food for plants, scientifically speaking. Food, in a biological sense, provides energy to the plant. Plant food provides nutrients to plants which are important, but not the same as food. Students really struggle with this.
