This is a great twist on structure and function of organelles in a cell. A worksheet, a rubric and a sample product is presented to show how this type of activity might generate interest and understanding for a middle school student. It is also interdisciplinary. It is a good formative assessment and it develops written and oral communication skills as well as creativity.

This article presents the guidelines for students to create a job advertisement for cell organelles. This is a higher level thinking activity, as students have to synthesize the advertisement from the function of the organelle. The article also provides a rubric. My students loved this activity, it allowed them to incorporate their sense of humor and creativity into their product.

The employment ads for cell organelles might be a good writing activity for high school students. For younger students, I think I would adapt this lesson plan to make travel brochures. “Come visit the cell”, and highlight features of the cell. Students could illustrate their 3-fold brochures and practice their marketing skills. Plus, it would push them to make analogies. For example, vacationers can feel safe at the cell as a vacation spot, since it is a gated community secured by the semi-permeable cell membrane.
