“Recycle Used Oil on America Recycles Day” by Body W. White explains America Recycles Day and offers some good suggestions to involve students that will benefit the environment through recycling. I like the way community service is addressed by suggesting informing the community of activities the school is participating in to encourage community participation as well. The article then moves into the topic of recycling used oil. Next, the author explains an insert given to students to help recognize America Recycles Day by explaining each section of the insert. Practices, pathways, processes, and products are all explained. It would have been helpful to actually see the insert instead of only reading about it and having it explained. This way if teachers wanted to complete a similar project, they could have a good example. A great summary is given at the end of the article with suggestions to launch a middle school program which encourages students and the community to use collection centers to recycle oil. Science standards covered by the activities are listed at the end which is helpful to teachers planning their lessons.
